Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns (PFM's) are somewhat of a hybrid between metal and porcelain crowns. When they are made, the dental technician first makes a shell of metal that fits over the tooth.A veneering of porcelain is then fused to this metal (in a high-heat oven), giving the crown a white tooth-like appearance.

The metal that lies underneath the crown's porcelain can sometimes be visualized as a dark line found right at the crown's edge.We usually try to position this dark edge just underneath the tooth's gum line. But, if a person's gums happen to recede, this dark line can show, thus spoiling the crown's appearance. While the cosmetic appearance of PFM crowns can be excellent, they often are not as aesthetically pleasing as all-ceramic ones.


Due to their life-like translucency, All ceramic / Full Ceramic crowns can be the most cosmetically pleasing of all the different types of dental crowns. And for this reason, they often make an excellent choice for restoring front teeth. They are biocompatible alternative for people suffering from metal allergies.

Procera® Crown Zirconia 0.4 – strength combined with better esthetics

Nobel Biocare's Procera® System is renowned for producing all-ceramic products with exceptional marginal fit, strength, and excellent esthetic qualities.

In response to its customers' needs, Nobel Biocare is now introducing a product that will enable laboratories more flexibility in their porcelain applications – Procera® Crown Zirconia 0.4. Based on the well-received Procera® Crown Zirconia, this 0.4mm thick coping version will allow for greater porcelain buildup.

The Procera® Crown Zirconia 0.4 still features market-leading flexural strength of 1200MPa, translucency and metal-free material that enable its use in all indications, but now offers even better esthetics in the anterior region.

LAVA is indicated for anterior or posterior crowns and for 5+ unit bridges (maximum span 48mm) with a maxium of two pontics next to one another in the posterior area and a maximum of four pontics next to one another in the anterior area and can be cemented with traditional crown and bridge cements. A special Vita-shading system and control of the processing steps ensures the high quality and brilliant translucency of Lava zirconia frameworks - characteristics that are vital for the aesthetic success of this system versus other brands. Zirconia materials have varying levels of quality depending on the individual manufacturer's process, although they are chemically similar. These qualitative differences are based on four basic processing parameters for zirconia, which will affect its performance in the mouth:

  • Differences in the zirconia powder with respect to grain sizes and utilised additives have an impact on the long-term stability as well as translucency of the restoration.
  • The process of pressing can be accomplished by different procedures and under different conditions, influencing marginal fit, strength and translucency.
  • Third, the pre-sintering conditions depend upon an optimised temperature, and are important for the strength of the pre-sintered material and affect its millability.
  • Last but not least, the colouring of the zirconia has an impact on marginal fit, strength and translucency. In the 3M ESPE process, Lava zirconia is coloured by colouring ions which diffuse into the zirconia material and are incorporated in the structure during the final sintering step, a process leading to the high strength of Lava zirconia
