Dental Health Advice for new and expecting mothers

With a baby on the way or just born, last thing you have time to think about is your teeth.

If you do not practise good dental health during and after your pregnancy, there could be long- term consequences for you and your baby.

It’s a must to visit your dentist if you are planning to get pregnant or shortly after you become pregnant. That visit can help you to ensure that your teeth and gums remain healthy throughout your pregnancy.

Gingivitis is the most common dental issue for expecting mothers. High levels of hormone progesterone creates more acid in the mouth during pregnancy which can lead to gingivitis. Symptoms include red, swollen gums that bleed during brushing and flossing. Untreated gingivitis become periodontitis.

Tooth decay is another risk during pregnancy. Acid in your mouth breaks down your enamel when you vomit. Breastfeeding moms are at higher risk. So they have to be always hydrated.

Tips

a. Maintain good oral hygiene

b. Thorough brushing twice per day and flossing once per day

c. Use bacteria killing mouthwash between meals as suggested by your dentist

d. Drink lots of water (Prevent dry mouth)

e. Second trimester will be the right time to visit dentist for oral prophylaxis and cavity fillings.
