Major Surgical Procedures

Trauma Care

Trauma to the head, face and neck region may need surgeries that require expertise and experience to successfully reconstruct the features of the anatomy, thus restoring our patients to optimum functionality and performance. These operations are performed by our chief surgeon Dr. Segin Chandran here at Kamala Dental and also at other trauma centres in Thiruvananthapuram like PRS Hospital and GG Hospital. After surgical care, prosthetic rehabilitation of these patients involving the teeth and associated structures are carried out by the prosthodontic team here at Kamala Dental.

Orthognathic Surgeries / Jaw Surgeries

Also known as corrective jaw surgeries or simply jaw surgeries, orthognathic surgeries are procedures designed to correct dentofacial anomalies related to growth, sleep apnea, TMJ disorders, bite-related problems and so on owing to skeletal deformities. Correction of complex jaw deformities using braces followed by surgical methods are undertaken here at Kamala Dental Specialty Hospital by our chief surgeon Dr. Segin Chandran whose expertise in this field is widely acknowledged. Typically in jaw surgery, the bone is modified and realigned to correct the deformity.  At Kamala Dental Specialty Hospital, our maxillofacial surgeon and our orthodontist work closely together to formulate a treatment plan using various feasibility studies and execute the same. After the surgical procedure, patients will be able to regain normalcy of function and aesthetics in a short period of time with long lasting and stable results for life.

Surgery For Craniofacial Deformity

Craniofacial deformities of the face, neck and skull that are present since birth necessitate skull and facial bone corrections and reconstruction of the facial skeleton. Dr. Segin Chandran along with a team of surgeons work in these areas of surgical expertise to give optimum results.

TMJ Disorders

Normal function of the temporomandibular joint connecting the lower jaw to the cranial base may be affected by arthritis, degenerative changes, congenital deformities or malalignment of teeth. These conditions result in clinical symptoms such as painful and restricted mouth opening, clicking and popping sounds and habitual dislocation of the joint. Such conditions are diagnosed using OPG and MRI and treated by conservative and surgical methods. Non-surgical options like occlusal splints and physiotherapy or even minimally invasive procedures like arthrocentesis (flushing of the joint) may be sufficient in most cases to relieve the adhesions and get the joint back to normal.

Surgical options are compulsory for conditions like ankylosis that may need surgical removal of fused segments and reconstruction of joints.

“Cleft Lip & Cleft Palate Correction

Cleft lip and cleft palate are considered to be the second most common congenital deformities among the Indian population. The corrections of these conditions in children or untreated adults is not only a cosmetic restoration but also a necessary procedure to close the cleft defect and restore normal function, thus allowing the facial structures to develop normally. We have a dedicated team of surgeons providing the best treatment possible with a multi-disciplinary approach. Our team includes a Maxillofacial Surgeon, an Orthodontist, a Pedodontist, an Otolaryngologist, an Auditory and Hearing Specialist, a Paediatrician, a Plastic Surgeon and a Psychologist along with social workers.

Head & Neck Cancer Surgeries

The screening of oral cancer and precancerous conditions is done here at Kamala Dental Specialty Hospital in a routine fashion. Biopsy and histopathological examination are the best ways to investigate such lesions, and treatments for cancerous conditions include surgery, radiation and/or chemotherapy. Resective and reconstructive surgeries in the head and neck region are done in the most sophisticated way here at Kamala Dental by adopting digital protocols.
