Orthodontics deals with the diagnosis, prevention and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. It can also focus on modifying facial growth, known as Dentofacial Orthopedics.
Crooked teeth prove to be a challenge for maintenance of adequate oral hygiene, and are at a greater risk of being lost early due to tooth decay and periodontal disease. These crooked teeth have greater biting forces and the stress on the chewing muscles can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome or neck pain, shoulder pain and even back pain. Such crooked or misaligned teeth will also detract from one’s appearance.
The benefits of orthodontic treatment include a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime because of their proper alignment.
After careful evaluation using diagnostic tools that include a full medical and dental health history, a clinical exam, plaster models of your teeth and full mouth radiographs and photographs, the dentist can decide whether orthodontics is recommended, and develop a treatment plan accordingly.
There are various discrepancies of the teeth and jaws that can be addressed as follows:
There are different types of appliances, both fixed and removable. These appliances work by placing gentle pressure on the teeth and jaws. The severity of your problem will determine which orthodontic approach is likely to be the most effective.
At Kamala Dental Specialty Hospital, we advocate different types of bracket systems for our Fixed Appliance Therapy (braces)
Metal brackets/ traditional braces
Modern metal brackets are smaller and less noticeable than the notorious metal mouth braces of the yesteryear that many adults recall. New heat activated arch wires use your body heat to help teeth move more quickly and are less painful.
Ceramic brackets braces
These are the same size and shape as metal braces, except that they are tooth colored or clear brackets that blend into the teeth, thus are deemed as aesthetic.
Metal Reinforced Ceramic braces
It provides an outstanding combination of easy debonding and sliding mechanics equal to metal brackets and strength and aesthetics of ceramic brackets.
Self-Ligating Bracket System
Self-ligating brackets are defined as a dental brace, which generally utilizes a permanently installed, moveable component to entrap the archwire. Self-ligating brackets have also been designed that do not require a movable component to hold the wire in place.
Self-ligating braces may be classified into two categories; Passive and Active that are fixed on the teeth sequentially as decided by the orthodontist.
This orthodontic treatment consists of a series of 18-30 custom made clear plastic aligners. They are removable and are replaced every 2 weeks as per the schedule customized for each individual after various feasibility studies. It is removable thus facilitating eating, drinking and even cleaning of the devices. The aesthetics are quite high due to the transparency of the such clear aligner devices.
