Angioedema is an area of swelling of the lower layer of the skin and tissue just under the skin or mucous membrane. Occur in face, tounge, larynx, abdomen or arms and legs. It can be life threatening if swelling causes tongue / throat to block the airway. Immediate management starts with antihistamine medication (in case of allergic angioneurotic edema).
Are there any warning signs of attack?
Attacks are unpredictable and may warn you with irritability, anxiety, extreme fatigue, rash or irritating sensation of skin with beginning of swelling.
Is it life threatening?
If it affects laryngeal tissues and results in swelling in throat, can be life threatening if breathing is obstructed.
How to differentiate it from tooth related odontogenic infections?
Odontogenic infections are always caused by bacteria. It can remain localised or spread to other teeth in the mouth. It can result in life threatening complications such as infections in fascial spaces of head and neck. The infected teeth become very sensitive to pressure and cold. On the other hand angioneurotic edema has no dental origin. People are often confused between these two, and if left untreated it becomes life threatening.
