Orthognathic Surgery /Jaw Surgery
There are many people with skeletal deformities either in the upper jaw or lower jaw or both. It is assessed 3-dimensionally and a Maxillofacial Surgeon along with his team perform Orthognathic Surgery to correct the jaws. Once done the patient’s face changes dramatically with improvement in chewing, speaking and breathing.
How long does a jaw surgery take?
Length of a case depends on how difficult the case is. It takes around 1-2 hours in one jaw. If surgery involves multiple procedures, can take up to 5 hours.
How long it takes to recover from a jaw surgery?
Usually it takes 1-2 weeks to recover. You may feel tired after surgery, but with proper nutrition and rest the patient will recover very soon.
What can we eat after jaw surgery?
Foods that are soft and can be mashed between tongue and teeth without chewing are usually given to patients after jaw surgery
How long does it take for swelling to subside after jaw surgery?
Majority of the swelling subsides after first two weeks. Facial swelling will peak about half a week to a week after surgery
How long will the numbness last?
Numbness is completely normal and temporary .In most cases it starts to wear off within a few weeks .Sometimes it can take up to 12-18 months for full sensation to restore to the area.
Does the Surgery weaken my teeth?
No, once the surgery is done the bite improves. When the jaws are not in correct position only few teeth will be in contact .Once the jaws position is corrected the teeth are in maximum contact .The chewing efficiency increases. It prevents excessive wear and tear of the teeth as well as jaw clicking and pain.
